2025 National Packaging Targets and Potential Federal Regulation Australia has set national packaging targets for 2025, aiming for 100% of packaging to be reusable, recyclable, or compostable and 70% of plastic packaging to be recycled or composted. However, as of 2021, only about 18% of plastic was recycled or composted. The federal government announced plans in August 2023 to move beyond these voluntary targets towards federal-level regulation, which could include mandatory design standards and recycled content targets for packaging, including PET.
